Launched in 1987 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the maison, the Sellier (or saddle maker) is another playful design from Hermès.
With the launch of its watchmaking subsidiary, La Montre Hermès S.A., in 1978, Hermes began again its watchmaking journey and the creations in the 1980s represent a window into the early design language of the creative directors.
The equestrian inspiration is immediately evident. The centre of the dial features a saddle nail ("clou de selle") while the bezel motif imitates the iconic saddle stich, a hand-stictch found in all Hermès leather goods. The maison has a tradition of following its own design codes and that is certainly felt with the Sellier.
